OXFORDSHIRE BASKETMAKERS – RICHARD and SUZANNE KERWOOD BRETON STYLE BASKET with rush handles.
Workshop fee: £95 per person. Suitable for beginners and intermediates. Open to members of Oxfordshire Basketmakers.
This basket is a rustic country basket made quickly and without too much refinement. It combines features of two Breton baskets: the Sklissen (or Button Basket) and the Baskodenn. There are some adaptions in the making process to make it easier for beginners.
You will start with a pre-made base and then be shown how to fit this to a jig and insert ribs. The weave is simple pairing, building up to multiple strands. The basket is finished with a simple track border and twisted rush handles can be added if desired.
The finished basket will be approximately 26 cm deep with a diameter at its widest point of about 50-54 cm. You may also have time to make a base for another basket.
